Vic: Experts urge approval for new cervical screening

Women's health experts say a cervical cancer screening system that's more than 60 yearsold is exposing Australian women to unnecessary risk.

And they've called on the federal government to fund an advanced screening system calledLiquid Based Cytology.

Professor MICHAEL QUINN, of Melbourne's Royal Women's Hospital, says the current papsmear test misses at least 20 per cent of cancerous and pre-cancerous cervical abnormalities.

And Professor NEVILLE HACKER, of Sydney's Royal Hospital for Women, says the LiquidBased Cytology method offers a greater chance of detecting cervical abnormalities.

However a spokesman for Health Minister KAY PATTERSON says it's not up to the governmentto decide whether the Liquid Based Cytology should be approved for a Medicare rebate.

He says the independent Medical Services Advisory Committee said last year there waswasn't enough evidence to fund it.
