Fed: Inquiry into status of reconciliation by March, 2003
Federal parliament's only indigenous representative, Australian Democrats Senator ADENRIDGEWAY, has initiated an inquiry into the status of reconciliation.
A Senate committee is to report to parliament by March next year on the issue.
Senator RIDGEWAY says it's time for answers so that all Australians -- including indigenouspeople -- can judge the government on its record of achievement.
Social Justice Commissioner BILL JONAS has described reconciliation attempts so farby the federal government as a cruel illusion.
He says the practical reconciliation promoted by the government simply manages inequality, instead of providing a plan to overcome it.
Dr JONAS says it's unfortunate an inquiry is necessary.
